RANDO-DUNE
Discover
the environment in the dunes
Within the framework of the contract for the environment along the coastline which was established
in March 2003, footpaths have been created
here in la Tranche sur Mer. "Rando-Dune" signifies
an installation of explanatory panels concerning the environment along the coastline as well as the protection
of the dunes in la Tranche sur Mer.
"Rando-Dune" in figures :
3 panels of general information situated in the centres of la Grière, la Terrière and la
Tranche sur Mer respectively.
- 7 panels concerning the means of protection and the exceptional sites.
- 19 indicators concerning the plants in the dunes to be discovered on the site. The association for
the protection of the nature (ADEV) has made the list of the differents plants in the dunes. (thistle,
beachgrass...).
- A marking out of 16 indicators reminding that dunes must be protected.
You will recognize the panels as well as the indicators due to the effigy of " Rando-Dune", a bird of the
dunes which is an endangered species (charadrius alexandrinus).
How are the dunes formed?
The dunes were formed in la Tranche sur Mer 2000 years ago. There is a rich vegetation: the environment is
dry and rather hot and calcaerous due to the great number of shells which have been washed up. Firstly, certain
plants manage to bind the sand carried away by the win. From that moment, the ground level will rise. The
sea must be prevented from intervening so that the dune can continue to advance. Due to the
"Chiendent des sables" (agropyron junceum), a plant of the dunes, the sediment will accumulate.
The dune will fasten due to the beachgrass (agropyron junceum), the most represented plant in the dunes.
Later, behind the fastened dune, trees like the holm oak will grow.
However, the dune is fragile and will shrink due to the erosion. That's why it is important to protect it. |
